Did you get married abroad and need that marriage to be legally recognized in Portugal? Or are you a descendant of Portuguese citizens and need to register your ancestor’s marriage to move forward with your Portuguese citizenship application? Marriage transcription – also known as marriage registration – is required in these cases so that a marriage performed abroad is officially recognized in Portugal. In some citizenship cases, a death transcription may also be required when a Portuguese family member passed away abroad and the record was never updated in Portugal.
In this guide, we explain the Recognition of Foreign Marriages in Portuguese Law, including when marriage registration is required, which documents are usually needed, where the process can be filed, and why Americans with Portuguese ties should review their records carefully before submitting an application.

Transcription is the procedure that allows a marriage record issued abroad to be registered in Portugal so that it has legal validity in the country.
Marriage registration is required whenever it is necessary to update a person’s marital status in Portugal.
This procedure can be completed even after the Portuguese citizen has passed away. This is common in citizenship applications when descendants need to regularize the marriage of an ancestor who lived abroad and never updated their marital status in Portugal.
Where you apply depends on the country where the marriage needs to have legal effect.
If you are Portuguese (or are applying for citizenship) and got married abroad, the registration can be completed through Portuguese Consulates or at any civil registry office, regardless of your place of residence. You can consult the official list of registry offices on the Institute of Registries and Notaries (IRN) website. However, the portal does not provide processing times — and some offices are considerably faster than others. Atlantic Bridge identifies the fastest registry offices and handles the entire process to reduce the completion time.
To complete the registration, you must provide:
The cost may vary depending on where the application is submitted:
There may also be costs for apostilles, certificate issuance, and translations.
The average processing time varies depending on where it is completed:
Once the process is completed, the marriage becomes part of the Portuguese civil registry. You can request, directly from the registry office or consulate, what is commonly referred to as a marriage registration certificate, which in practice corresponds to an updated Portuguese certificate.
If one of the spouses is a Portuguese citizen, the marriage will already be recorded as an annotation on that person’s respective birth record.
Legally, there is no such thing as a “divorce registration.” For a divorce to be legally recognized in another country, it is not registered in the same way as a marriage: instead, it is necessary to record the divorce as an annotation or obtain recognition of a foreign judgment.
If you got married and divorced abroad, the correct procedure must follow this mandatory order:
In addition to marriage registration, it may also be necessary to complete a death registration in Portugal, especially in citizenship applications.
Death registration is required when a Portuguese citizen died abroad and the death was never registered in Portugal. This is common, for example, when a Portuguese citizen moved abroad, started a family, and passed away without updating their civil status in Portuguese system, making it necessary to regularize these records in order to continue with a nationality application.
The documents and steps are similar to those required for marriage registration and generally require a full-form death certificate bearing a Hague Apostille.
In some cases, it is possible to request marriage and death registration together, which can streamline the submission of documents and the review of the process.
You can complete the process yourself by following the steps above, but although it is an administrative procedure, any error in the order of names, the date of the marriage, or the choice of marital property regime may result in the application being rejected.
Marriage certificates issued abroad may contain errors or discrepancies that need to be corrected before they are submitted for registration in Portugal. For this reason, having specialists review the documents in advance can help prevent you from spending money unnecessarily on consular fees and document issuance.
