Lisbon was ranked as the 5th “greenest” capital city in Europe, according to research commissioned by an ecological straw company, Drinking Straw. The study analyzed which areas have the most green spaces per hundred thousand people, taking into account the amount of parks, gardens, wildlife areas, forests, playgrounds and water bodies, and comparing it with the population size of each city. Paris (France) comes top of the ranking, followed by Luxembourg (Luxembourg), Dublin (Ireland), and Cardiff (Scotland).

Lisbon currently has 61 green spaces. There are 25 parks, 26 gardens, one wildlife area, seven playgrounds and two forests. According to the study, in the Portuguese capital there are 4.59 parks and 4.77 gardens per hundred thousand inhabitants in the city.
The first on the list, Paris, has 325 green spaces in total, accounting for 7.62 parks and 5.66 gardens for every 100,000 people.
In 2020, Lisbon won the Green Capital Awardawarded by the the European Commission. Through exhibitions, debates, initiatives and political commitments, the Lisbon municipality has been reinforcing its commitment to environmental sustainability. The city has also invested in improving mobility conditions, expanding green spaces, and saving energy. It is worth reinforcing that Lisbon was the first capital in Europe to sign the New Covenant of Mayors for Climate Change and Energy in 2016.
