Who can apply for the Digital Nomad Visa Italy?

The Italy Digital Nomad Visa is available to non-EU and non-Swiss citizens who work remotely for companies outside of Italy, including professionals with employment contracts or freelance service providers. However, certain professional criteria must be met:

• Highly qualified in your field, demonstrating advanced remote work skills using modern telecommunications technologies.
• Proven previous experience as a digital nomad for at least six months, anywhere in the world.
• 3 years of professional experience within the past 7 years (for managers and specialists in information and communication technologies).
• Proof of professional qualifications: university degree (obtained more than 3 years ago), professional license, or evidence of experience in the field.
• Proof of existing employment contract or job offer requiring skills consistent with a higher education level.

According to Article 27 of the Italian Immigration Code, the visa is intended for those who:

“engage in highly qualified work activity using technological tools capable of enabling remote work, whether as a self-employed worker or as a collaborator or employee of a company, even if not residing in Italy.”

Financial Requirement for the Italy Digital Nomad Visa:

The primary financial requirement for the Italian remote work visa relates to healthcare costs. To be eligible, the applicant must earn at least 3 times the minimum required for healthcare cost exemption. In other words:

• Minimum annual income equivalent to at least €28,000, derived from self-employed or employed professional activities. It’s worth noting that this income doesn’t need to be entirely from remote work and can be supplemented with other earnings, including passive income.

Other Requirements for the Italy Digital Nomad Visa:

In addition to professional and financial requirements, applicants for the Italy Digital Nomad Visa must also provide:

• Valid health insurance coverage for one year, which can be private coverage or enrollment in the Italian National Health Service, costing €2,000 euros – US$2,100 (R$10,785) per year. It must cover medical care and hospitalization valid throughout Italy.
• Proof of accommodation during the stay in Italy, either through property acquisition, rental agreement, or confirmed lodging reservation.
• Certificate of no criminal record with no convictions in the last 5 years.

These requirements ensure that applicants have the necessary skills, financial resources, and conditions to work remotely while temporarily living in Italy as digital nomads.

Family Reunification with the Italian Digital Nomad Visa:

Similar to other countries, Italy allows visa holders to bring their families to live in the country (spouse and children under 18, parents under certain conditions).

The cost is €116.

Permission to Work in Italy:

Although the financial requirements for the visa encompass other income sources besides remote work salary, this authorization does not allow you to work for Italian companies.

Validity of the Italy Digital Nomad Visa:

The visa initially authorizes one year of stay in Italy. However, it can be renewed.

How to Apply for the Italian Digital Nomad Visa?

To apply for the Italy Digital Nomad Visa, schedule an appointment with the Italian consulate in your country of residence. You must complete the visa application form (leave it unsigned until in the presence of an official). Locate the Italian Consulate of your interest and use the form provided specifically by them.

Along with the form, you will also need to submit two recent passport-sized photographs, as well as your passport, which must be valid for at least three months and have a blank page for the visa sticker.

Upon arrival in the country, you have eight days to apply for the “permesso di soggiorno,” which is the Italian residence permit. Initially, it will be valid for 1 year.

Self-employed workers must also apply for an Italian tax code and seek advice on the best way to pay local taxes. In cases where there are bilateral social security agreements between Italy and the country of origin, such agreements will apply. In the absence of such agreements, Italian social security and insurance coverage regulations will apply.
